5.2.11 Types of gearboxes
Nowadays, five- and six-speed manual transmissions are used in passenger cars. This indicates that the gearbox has five or six forward gears and one reverse gear.
Structurally, two- and three-shaft gearboxes are distinguished.

Gears with helical teeth are used in the gearbox (shown in Figure 5.9) of passenger cars that are intended for movement on public roads.
This gear coupling is used for reducing the size of the gear, improving the smoothness and quiet operation, and also for reducing wear in gearboxes.
Straight tooth gears (Figure 5.10) are used in sports cars (to be more precise - rally cars), where noiselessness is the last indicator in the list of requirements.
Special mechanisms, the so-called speed synchronizers, are used for facilitating gear shifting in all two-shaft and three-shaft manual gearboxes.
Note
Figure 5.11 shows one of the options for the gear shifting speed synchronizer.
