5.2.13 Three-shaft gearboxes
Note
Three-shaft gearboxes are widely used in cars with a longitudinal arrangement of the powertrain, where it is necessary to make the output shaft rotate in the same direction as the input.
The design feature of this gearbox is the availability of three shafts:
- clutch (drive);
- idler;
- main (driven).
The input shaft is connected via a clutch to the crankshaft. The thrust from the input shaft is then transmitted through the gears to the idler shaft, and from it to the output shaft, then to the main gear and wheels.
Note
Figure 5.14 shows an example of the design and power flow when engaging different gears in a three-shaft gearbox.
